The Lake District: A Food Lover's Paradise

Long known for its excellent food and drink, the Lake District is a top destination for foodies of all persuasions. Whether it is a taste of artisan baking, an indulgent pudding or a cold beer, we have fantastic produce from locals who bring their care and skill direct to the table. Fads in eating and drinking may come and go, but these people have used the Lakes and Cumbria landscape as their own personal pantry for generations. So where does the visitor start?

Perhaps the most well-known delicacy is the Cumberland sausage.  So important to the butchers of Cumbria, it has now been granted special protected status under EU Law. This will guarantee the heritage and authenticity of the product and would prove a major boost for Cumbria's butchers.Traditionally, these have a curly shape and can be up to 50cm long. Strictly speaking, the classic sausages have no artificial additives and are made with chopped rather than minced meat for superior texture. It should come as little surprise that this item is a must-have on our breakfast menu.

For those with a sweeter tooth however, local baking takes some beating and our very own village of Grasmere is the home of Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread Shop. Situated in the heart of the village and using the same recipe since the nineteenth century, the aroma of freshly baked gingerbread filling the air is a heady experience in itself: www.grasmeregingerbread.co.uk

With such wonderfully clean water, craft beers and microbreweries in the Lake District are also thriving. Keswick, Coniston and Hardknott are just three brilliant makers of fine brews, producing everything from traditional bitter to modern IPAs. Many of these companies also offer brewery tours in the Lake District (there is an excellent guide and map here: www.brewedincumbria.com).

This enables a wider selection of wines to be opened whilst still maintaining their flavour and freshness. The extensive resulting wine cellar, filled with more than 200 options, is now available to everyone as wines can be offered by the glass. Cheers!
