Great Lake District Events for Autumn 2016

With the shorter days and rich colours of autumn reaching Grasmere, we welcome in one of the very best times of the year to visit the Lake District. Whether you are a fan of the arts, a keen collector or simply looking to do some early Christmas gift shopping, there is an awful lot going on as we approach the end of 2016!

Whatever your tastes, Rothay Garden Hotel is a beautiful location to stop and explore many of the Lake District’s best loved places, attractions and events. Here is our own in-a-nutshell guide to what’s on in the Lake District in the coming weeks and months, starting with fairs, workshops and other events within just a short journey of the hotel.

Antique and Collectors Fairs in Penrith

(12th Nov, Evergreen Community Hall, Penrith)

For the travelling magpie, this is a great chance to pick out a bargain or two and meet both dealers and fellow collectors in a friendly setting. There is always a good spread of crafts and collectibles on offer, from ceramics and furniture to retro toys. The event runs from 10am to 4pm and is run by Lakes Collectibles (07841 145692)  in the historic town of Penrith, which is well worth a day excursion in its own right.

Craft Workshops with South Lakeland Lacemakers

(5th Nov &  Sat 3rd Dec, Allan Bank)

Ever fancied embroidering your own personalized piece of fine lace? This event features both demonstrations and a hands-on session with the experts in a fittingly traditional and elegant National Trust setting. You’ll see a whole selection of techniques and beautifully crafted finished works on the day, maintaining a thread that has survived for generations. From Bug Hunting to Beatrix Potter Art at Wordsworth House

William Wordsworth’s house is a fascinating little place to visit at any time of year, but with a whole program of events for late 2016, the autumn looks especially promising, especially for fans of the arts and younger guests. You could sign up for a special Be Inspired by Beatrix Art Class (Fri 21 Oct), try a Bug Hunters & Explorers session (Sat 22nd Oct) or enjoy classic storytelling sessions (Beatrix Potter by the Fire is on Oct 25th, while Spooky Stories are read on the 26th). Drama at Theatre by the Lake

Should you wish to mix some live performing arts into your visit, this Kendal theatre and arts venues has plenty going on as the nights draw in. You could discover a re-imagined Greek Tragedy in “Elektra” (until 2nd Nov), get stuck into political thriller “The Vertical Hour” ( Until 5th Nov) or opt for some more light-hearted family comedy with “Watch it, Sailor!”  For all show times and ticket details, see www.theatrebythelake.com

The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, Kendal (14th-16th October ) Image title

This superb event is not only a great day out for all lovers of graphic novels and classic comic art, but a rather special Lake District exclusive. Packed with free exhibitions and inspiration, this is your chance not only to view a mind-blowing variety of great comic art, but to get up close and personal with the artists themselves. From lifelong collectors to young artists, this is a colourful and totally unique event.

Ambleside Christmas Lights Switch On

(Sat 19th Nov, from 10am onwards)

A whole raft of stalls, sights and activities make up this enjoyable day of celebration in Ambleside. Featuring journeys aboard a steamboat, market stalls and plenty of entertainment, there is plenty to entertain all ages here.
