Andrew celebrates 25 years as Head Chef at Rothay Garden

Image titleToday sees the Head Chef at Rothay Garden – the award-winning 4-star hotel in Grasmere – celebrate 25 years at the hotel, working for owner Chris Carss all that time.

Head Chef Andrew Burton arrived at Rothay Garden in 1991 with a CV which included time spent in the kitchens of the Savoy, the Connaught and the Berkeley hotels in London.  Initially mistaken at his interview for someone applying for a kitchen porter’s job, Chris Carss soon realised that he was talking to the most highly qualified chef he had ever met!

Twenty-five years on, the partnership today with Chris is stronger than ever, and Andrew will be  guest of honour at a gala celebration dinner at the hotel tonight.    Not only will key staff and friends be at the dinner, but so will fifty of the hotel’s regular guests, some of which have stayed more than 75 times at Rothay Garden!

During that time, Andrew has overseen half a million meals being served, including five tons of sizzling bacon, almost one million eggs fried, poached and scrambled, and over £150,000 of cheese purchased and served, much of it from local producers.  He has also become the longest-serving hotel Head Chef in Grasmere – and, Chris Carss believes, possibly in the whole of the Lake District.

As Chris says, “without doubt, Andrew has been one of the foundation stones of our success here at Rothay Garden.  Our guests love his cooking, and, unlike many hotels these days, our dinners are still immensely popular and one of the key ingredients of a short break or holiday at Rothay Garden”.

Andrew Burton has overseen the hotel’s Garden Restaurant win the coveted 2 AA Rosettes award for more than 15 years now, and the AA has rated Rothay Garden as one of “the best restaurants which aim for and achieve higher standards, better consistency and where a greater precision is apparent in the cooking”.  They also praise Andrew’s “obvious attention to the selection of quality ingredients, much of which are sourced locally”.

Andrew has also received other frequent plaudits from guests and critics alike, with the Good Food Guide saying “Food at Rothay Garden is beautifully cooked, and portions are perfectly sized”.   At tonight’s celebration dinner, Chris Carss will praise Andrew’s “dedication, commitment, good humour and unwavering support over the years”.
