Alternative and Adventurous Lake District Activities
22 February 2016
As much as we love traditional pursuits here at Rothay Garden Hotel, walking and cycling are not the only way to explore the beauty of the Lake District. Whether it is a case of climbing the peaks, using some very different wheels or even taking to the skies, there are some delightfully different alternatives to try on your next visit. Adventure pursuits, adrenaline sports; call them what you will, they offer thrills and twists galore, not to mention experiences you won't forget in a hurry. So, for those who are prepared to be bold and try something new, here are some of the most daring and fun things to do in the Lake District today:
Lake District Ghyll Scrambling

What is ghyll scrambling, you ask? With aspects similar to gorge walking and canyoning, it offers an experience totally different to the usual hiking and day trips. A “Ghyll” is a steep stream, cut into the rocky landscape and the process of ghyll scrambling involves making your descent in dramatic fashion using any means necessary. That can mean hopping from rock to rock, climbing, sliding and other hair-raising manoeuvres. And because getting soaked is all part of the fun, it’s rapidly becoming one of the most popular wet weather activities in the Lake District, not to mention a fun day out for families and groups of visitors. Try Lake District Ghyll Scrambling for a range of options and all the gear you need.
Paragliding, Lake District Style
Have you ever wanted to soar like a buzzard, or wondered what Cumbria might look like from high above? Paragliding in the Lake District is about the most spectacular way possible to take your own aerial tour. Not to be taken lightly, however, you will need a little courage and the help of a friendly expert, who can turn this daunting prospect into a safe and scintillating day out. Several providers exist, but one of the best are Escape Adventures, who run tailor made courses and offer paragliding lessons from scratch.
Take a Lake District Segway Tour
When visitors talk about taking off on two wheels, they once meant a bicycle trip. However, these days they might also be referring to riding a Segway. These one-person vehicles look a little odd, but are a lot of fun and easy to use with a little expert help. Several providers offer Segway rental in the Lake District. Try Lakeland Segway for a range of experiences and guided sessions to get your balance.
Zip Trekking Thrills
Travelling along a wire, suspended sixty feet off the ground is not exactly the most “relaxing” way to travel. But a Lake District zip wire challenge can deliver big thrills and butterflies galore as you’re launched through the tree tops! One of the nearest places to go zip trekking near us is Go Ape at Grizedale (about 12 miles from Grasmere) who run a range of experiences including family and group days out.
Rothay Garden Hotel: The ultimate base for your Lakeland Adventure
If there is one ingredient to make any Lake District adventure break complete, it is great accommodation with first class food and hospitality. Rothay Garden is the perfect place to relax after your day of excitement, with a superb restaurant and spa, besides a range of supremely comfortable rooms.
