Celebrating 25 years

Occasionally some in the hotel industry can forget that every guest has a different reason for staying at a hotel, a different highlight of their stay, and that every short break is a special one.  So, responding to a suggestion from one of our guests, we launched the Rothay Garden 25th Anniversary Guest Competition!

It’s all about Memories!  Many of you emailed us your special memories of staying at Rothay Garden.  We’d like to share some with you here…for more visit our blog!

From RH – “We stayed at Rothay Garden Hotel in February 2013 with the aim of touring the area.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, as it turned out, we were hit by the weather and snowed in. My abiding memory of our short stay was making use of the Spa facilities which we may not have used otherwise.

We donned our complimentary towelling bathrobes and traipsed through the snow to the Spa. Looking out on the blanket of freezing white through the full-length picture windows from the comfort of the Spa was amazing. Using the Aroma Room, Hydro Spa pool, Herbal Pine Sauna and heated loungers whilst looking at the white carpet outside was like being in total cocoon mode”.

Rain! Rain! Rain!
Rain! Rain! Rain!

From JN – “During November 2009, our grandson, Ben, had arranged to visit us from USA with his fiancée, Maria. This was to be her first visit to England and we thought that the Lake District and Yorkshire Coast would be a fair selection of places to visit in the short time they would be with us.

Obviously, our choice of hotels in the Lakes was our favourite, the Rothay Garden.  We were due to spend one night there and then go onto Whitby for a second night.

Perhaps the rain on our journey over from East Yorkshire on 18th November should have given us a clue.
As usual, we were delighted with the hotel.  We had a lovely evening meal, giving Maria a great introduction to what the Lakes can offer with such a lovely hotel.  After dinner drinks were wonderful beside the roaring fire, with the rain pouring down outside.

The next day dawned with the river rising and the gardens flooding.  We were informed that there was no way that we could leave Grasmere as the roads were blocked in all directions.  After cancelling our Whitby Hotel, we watched the waters rise but the banks to the river, on our side, did not break – just leaked in places.

Ben and Maria had a “splashing” walk into the village while my husband and I just relaxed.  The hotel was brilliant, letting us stay on for the second night at a reduced rate.  The professional attitude of the staff calmed the situation and everyone made the best out of a possibly difficult and dangerous situation”.

From DS-R – “In response to your invitation in the Newsletter, for guests to share their memories of visits to the Rothay Garden, it prompted us to recall our first visit, back in 1987, which we believe pre-dates your own association with the hotel. Our next visit was to celebrate our Silver wedding in 1991 - after which we were completely 'hooked' and have returned almost every year since.

On one particularly memorable visit, when our daughter and her partner were staying nearby in the Lakes, we arranged for them to join us for dinner, during which the said partner took us by surprise, by asking for our daughter’s hand in marriage. This was celebrated by a bottle of Rothay Garden champagne. Six years on from then, the married couple have presented us with a lovely grandson, who has already been introduced to the Lake District. We look forward to our usual visit in 2015. In 2016 we will be celebrating our Golden wedding anniversary - where else, but the Rothay Garden”.
