Rothay Garden is named the Cumbria Small Business of the Year! - 23/10/2009

Last night, Rothay Garden hotel was awarded the prestigious "Cumbria Small Business of the Year" award at a black-tie ceremony at leading Lakes visitor attraction Rheged.

Chris Carss and Head Chef Andrew Burton were at the gala dinner and collected the award in front of 400 of Cumbria's "great and good", and the evening's keynote speaker, Shadow Chancellor George Osbourne.

Shortlisted with two other businesses, and the only hotel out of 30 businesses to feature in the Awards finals, little did Chris and Andrew expect that Rothay Garden would win the award outright!  In presenting the award, the judges commented that Rothay Garden had "undoubtedly raised the standard in luxury hotels in Cumbria".

"This was a bolt out of the blue", said Chris Carss.  "We have had some considerable success winning tourism and hotel awards in the past, but to be voted by such a distinguished panel as Cumbria's Best Business with under 50 employees, when there are literally hundreds of such businesses, is a real honour".

"Perfectly positioned on the edge of Grasmere village … The food is something you should be warned about – dinner was absolutely gorgeous and five courses long."
