National Business Award Won By Rothay Garden - 02/02/2011
One of the most prestigious awards in the hotel and catering industry has been won by Rothay Garden hotel.
At a glittering ceremony in London last week, Chris Carss was presented with the UK Hotel Excellence Award for "Excellence in Business Management". The award was presented to Chris by one of the country's most high-profile and respected travel journalists, Simon Calder, travel editor of The Independent and frequent contributor to ITV.
Rothay Garden won the "Excellence in Business Management" award ahead of many other entries from hotels across Britain, after submitting a detailed entry which showed how Chris and the team at Rothay Garden have bucked the recession by improving facilities and standards at the hotel whilst increasing guest satisfaction and improving occupancy levels.
After the redevelopment of Rothay Garden in the first half of 2008, to become the Lake District's newest four-star hotel, Rothay Garden has gone from strength to strength. Many factors played a part in winning the award, including the team-approach shown by staff at the hotel (eight of whom have clocked up an impressive 83 years' service), and innovative marketing campaigns, including one targeting Bentley owners, and one in which Rothay Garden was the only hotel in the north of England to be promoted in "The Chic Collection's" special collection for readers of Vogue magazine.
As the judges noted, all this was achieved in a year when Cumbria sufferered the worst snow and floods in recent times. Commenting on the success, Chris Carss said "I'm absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award. The judges included some of the most experienced hoteliers in the country, and to be voted top in the "Excellence in Business Management" category is a dream come true. The success we have generated in the last two years has enabled me to begin an important new development here at Rothay Garden, including a brand new Riverside Spa, a new Conservatory Restaurant and the creation of luxurious new bedrooms and suites, which will all be completed by Easter", he said.
"In a rural area with more good restaurants than most big cities can boast, chef Andrew Burton has turned the Rothay into a sparkling gastronomic gem. Not only is the food clever and delicious, this artist of a chef ensures it is incredibly beautiful too."
