Beatrix Potter's Lake District
The life of Cumbria’s favourite daughter, Beatrix Potter, was celebrated recently in cinemas across the world with the release of the major movie starring Renee Zellweger as “Miss Potter” and Ewan McGregor as children’s writer Beatrix Potter and her publisher and lover Norman Warne. The film has brought hundreds of “set-jetters” from the UK, USA, Japan and other countries to see where it was made and to experience the scenery which inspired Beatrix Potter so deeply.
Hill Top, Sawrey – Hill Top farmhouse is where Beatrix Potter lived and wrote many of her stories. Owned by the National Trust, it retains much of its original character and is furnished just as it would have been during her day.
Tarn Hows – Only a short distance from Sawrey is Tarn Hows. Bought by Beatrix Potter, this popular beauty spot is ideal for a leisurely walk and picnic.
Loughrigg Tarn – Used as a scenic film location for “Miss Potter”, Loughrigg Tarn is located in the fells between Grasmere and Buttermere, and has striking views north west towards the Langdale Pikes.
The World of Beatrix Potter attraction – Meet Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck and friends. The attraction in Windermere shows the world of rabbits, ducks and other animals portrayed in her books.
Steamboat Museum – On display here in Windermere, you will find Beatrix Potter’s very own rowing boat – plus lots more, including steamboats, houseboats and other craft. For fans of Arthur Ransome’s “Swallows and Amazons”, Captain Flint’s houseboat and the original “Amazon” are also on display.
Beatrix Potter Gallery – The gallery, in Hawkshead village, is an exhibition of the original children’s book illustrations, and also gives a fascinating insight into her life and work as a farmer.
"We did have the perfect answer to our exertions, plunging into our en-suite whirlpool bath in the delightful Rothay Garden Hotel, which provides an oasis of luxury on the edge of Grasmere."
